Social Business Program

On the Up - a journey across Africa to uncover the most inspiring social entrepreneurs

Logo_for_web

We are now in Rwanda - half way through a journey from Cape Town to Cairo to uncover Africa’s most inspiring social entrepreneurs.  As we transcend the east coast of this giant continent, we are searching each country for real changemakers; people who are bringing entrepreneurial solutions to much debated development issues.  Through our networks and research, we have identified a suite of changemakers we will be visiting (see below). With only two weeks in each country our time is limited so the list is by no means exhaustive. We’ve tried to capture a real breadth of causes and we’re looking for people and projects who are truly exceptional.

Between May and August 2011, we will be spending time with these social entrepreneurs and their projects so we can really delve into their stories, unpicking the ingredients for how passion has been converted into action. We want to get to grips with the factors which contribute to social change success and more importantly, we want to know how we can inspire others to help.  Just as we were inspired when we were students, we want to galvanise others to become changemakers too.

Along our travels we are blogging about our discoveries through our website (www.ontheup.org.uk) and facebook (www.facebook.com/ontheupcapetocairo). We will be writing short blog posts with our initial insights including suggestions for action for all of our followers. Amalgamating the best stories from projects across South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Sudan & Egypt, we will also endeavour to write a book. This will cover a deeper critique of the social entrepreneurs who really struck us and will focus on how the readers can get involved. We will sell the book for a small profit which will be donated back to the projects profiled.

Please follow our journey and contribute any suggestions of social entrepreneurs we should be profiling along the way.

Artemisia Summit April 2011 DAY 2

P4070292

Artemisia Summit 08/04/2011

DAY 2

The second day of the Summit started at 9.00 a.m.. We started the agenda for the day learning about the definition of social business.

Highlighting the importance of providing a product or a service to people at the bottom of the pyramid, for profit model and the social impact that the organization wants to achieve.

Another crucial component of every social business is the intention to create a positive impact in society as nobel prize winner Dr. Junus said “Intention is what matters the most”.

We learned to analyze organizations based on Canvas model. It is a very useful and simple tool which allows to better understand the business model of any organization in a very short period of time. No need to read dozens of pages explaining the business model, just a simple visualized scheme. Read more about the Canvas Model

In order to understand the tool we applied it to several organizations, starting from the well-known Grameen Bank or The Red Cross and finishing with analyzing our own organizations.

Each intern showed their organization to each other using the canvas model tool. The organizations presented were:

·         Inclusive Planet  http://www.inclusiveplanet.com/

·         Onergy  http://onergy.in/

·         Altis

·         Sahaja  http://www.sahajasamrudha.org/

·         Barrier Break / Sign´ntalk  http://www.barrierbreak.com/

·         Sarvaja / Piramal Water Solutions  http://www.sarvajal.com/

·         Babajob  http://www.babajob.com/

·         Mdhil www.mdhil.com

After lunch break we had a session delivered by David Pires (Mdhil intern) and Youni Nip (Babajob intern). Both of them were selected in 2010 to work in social business too. The session aim was to transmit their own experience during the time spent in India and encourage the new interns to make the most out of this experience.

The next session showed us more information about organizations that support social ventures in many ways like The Aspen Institute http://www.aspeninstitute.org/, Acumen Fund www.acumenfund.org/, Vox Capital http://www.voxcapital.com.br/, E+CO http://eandco.net/, Villgro http://www.villgro.org/ and many more.

That was the end of Day 2 agenda.
